New buildThe challenge
Major construction projects can often suffer from ‘too many cooks’, resulting in delays and difficulties integrating and installing different systems. Keeping the number of suppliers to a minimum increases efficiency hugely. Manor Lodge School in Radlett required a new facility that would not only comply with its green belt situation but also provide a safe and reliable physical activity hall for students.
The solution and approach
The solution was a striking eco-roof design that would also blend in seamlessly with its surroundings. Working with architects Aedifice and installers A2O, Bailey supplied the complete roofing solution on top of the Envirodek structural system. Including the eco-roof, sedum, Bailey Laser-line eaves, rainwater system, Bailey Atlantic single-ply roofing membrane, V-Plank Soffit and Mansafe System.
Nicholas Martin from Aedifice comments “It was important to us that we had just one company responsible for the entire roof system because of the complex nature of the curved design, not to mention the actual ‘load’ the roof would be supporting. We wanted a single point of contact should any issues arise... Bailey came up with the whole solution for the build-up, which worked really well as it meant that each element worked together as one unit – from the deck and waterproofing right through to the gutters and eaves detail... We knew Bailey and A2O had experience working with green roofs on a slope so it made perfect sense to choose them for this project... Not only did Bailey supply the products but they also took an active role in the planning and design stage to ensure the roof not only looked striking but would be structurally sound."
Tim Gray from installer A2O continues "A designer from the Bailey team worked closely with the design team at A2O to ensure every element met the brief. The project wasn’t without its challenges! The acute ‘ski slope’ curve of the roof meant we had to consider how to prevent the soil from slipping down the roof. Bailey supplied a number of retention bars to ensure slippage was minimised."
Eamonn Geoghegan from Bailey comments:
"From our perspective, this perfectly demonstrates the extent of our capabilities. We’re very proud to be able to provide the green roof system as it is a difficult application, but this project is a great example of how well it can work... We worked very closely with Aedifice and A2O to achieve the overall vision, not only to ensure the right system was used, but also recommending the most cost-effective solution."
The result
The new sports hall at Manor Lodge school was completed with stunning results!
